Today, this tower is the only one of its kind in Mecklenburg and is one of the oldest structures in the state.
The Fangel Tower is a stone castle, which was built in 1360 as part of a land defense for the outer city defense of Parchim. The structure has a height of 10 meters, a wall thickness of 1 meter and 100 stone layers. The entrance to the tower is 2.50 meters above the ground and used to be accessible by a retractable ladder. This observation post was used for defense and notification of the guard at the Wockertor through the embrasures. At that time, especially robber barons represented a danger, who drove the cattle herds away from the municipal field. The name "Fangelturm" was first used at the beginning of the 19th century and suggests that it was used as a prison.
Today, this tower is the only one of its kind in Mecklenburg and is one of the oldest structures in the state.
The Fangelturm is open to the public from May to October from 08:00 - 18:00.
