Viewpoints

Every year in spring and autumn, tens of thousands of cranes gather in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, using the area as a roosting and resting place. The wooden lookout in Tankow on the Rügen island of Ummanz offers one of the most spectacular observation sites for this unique natural spectacle.

But the lookout is not only a destination for the time of the crane flight. Throughout the year, Tankow offers an ideal lookout for a variety of bird species that breed and raise their young here. You will find twelve different species of ducks, such as mallards or whistling ducks, numerous species of gulls, such as laughing gulls, herring gulls or even great black-backed gulls. From August on, gray geese, white-fronted geese, bean geese and, in autumn, Canada geese, avocets and oystercatchers arrive, to name but a few. In this beautiful, untouched natural landscape, the white-tailed eagle is also not a rare guest. Since the observation point is roofed, you will find a sheltered, dry place to discover the beauties of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft even in bad weather. Do not forget: Binoculars and camera!
