The former inner-German border strip, the "Green Belt", is virtually predestined to be further enhanced by the creation of new forest areas. So it was only logical to add another climate forest to the existing ones in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from summer 2010. The first planting campaign took place in April 2011. The total area consists of three parcels of land, two of which were reforested as part of the planting campaign with the Schwerin energy supplier WEMAG.
Here in the Biosphere Reserve Schaalsee climate forest, initial plantings were made on around 34 hectares of fallow farmland with pedunculate and sessile oaks as the main tree species combined with hornbeams and small-leaved lime trees and other deciduous trees suitable for the site. The plan is for the forest to develop in free succession on around half of the area. For ecological reasons, the forest will not be used for forestry purposes. In the long term, the stands will develop into species- and structure-rich natural forests with a high proportion of deadwood.
How to find the climate forest at the Biosphere Reserve Schaalsee
The reforestation area is located approx. 14 km west of Gadebusch, approx. 1.5 km southwest of the village of Dechow on the B 208, coming from Roggendorf in the direction of Mustin. The best way to reach the climate forest is via the B 208 towards Ratzeburg. There is a parking lot at the junction towards Groß Molzahn. From there it is about 100 meters to the reforestation area. To reach the area, you have to cross the B 208 at the junction. A footpath leading to the reforestation area begins on the other side.
Forest shares for our climate forests
In all parts of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a total of over 100 hectares of new forest adapted to climate change have been planted at 19 different locations since 2007. The reforestation of these additional areas was financed by "forest shares" from holidaymakers, residents and businesses. During planting campaigns for our climate forests, guests can talk to forestry experts and learn exciting details about the forest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
