The city wall with the mill gate in Sternberg enclosed the old town of Sternberg in the Middle Ages.
The city wall and the city gates were destroyed in 1629 during the 30-year war and rebuilt in 1839 in the present form. While originally there were four city gates, today only this mill gate with its entrance and exit still exists. A staircase in the rampart leads to the mill gate. The gate, built in late Gothic style, was extensively renovated in 1998. In November 2007, after comprehensive renovation of the rampart wall, a lighting system was put into operation.
