Stella Maris Catholic Church is considered the northernmost of the Archdiocese of Berlin.
The Viennese professor Wilhelm Bong founded a Catholic children's holiday home in Binz in 1924. Already in 1925, a small chapel building was also inaugurated. In the village itself, however, there was only one Catholic family. In summer, services were held by vacationing priests, in winter at irregular intervals from Bergen. Outposts of the Catholic Church were among others Sellin and Putbus (later assigned to Garz), but also Goehren and Thiessow. For 33 years, from 1963-1996, parish priest Kurt Ponikewski worked in the parish. Under him the chapel was enlarged in 1965/66. It is a simple elongated low building without architectural features, dedicated to the "Stella Maris", the Mother of God as a star on the sea, which gives orientation to the skipper. In 1997, a restored statue of the Virgin Mary by an Italian master from the end of the 19th century was reinstalled in the chancel. The extension of the chapel with a beautiful annex took place in 2011.
