The westernmost headland of the Wittow peninsula on the island of Rügen is called the "Bug". The "Bug" begins south of the village of Dranske.
The Bug peninsula stretches from Dranske over a distance of 8 km and an area of 500 ha in a southwesterly direction. It is only 55 meters wide at the narrowest point in the northeast, in the southwest the maximum width measures about 1,500 meters. To the west, the Bug joins the Baltic Sea. The northern part of the island of Hiddensee is offshore from the Baltic Sea. To the southwest, the Vitter Bodden borders the Bug. In the northeast the Wieker Bodden and in the southeast the Buger Bodden and the Rassower Strom separate the peninsula from the Island of Rügen. The southernmost point is the Buger Haken. The southern part of the Bug has belonged to the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft since September 12, 1990. The Bug was a restricted military area for many decades. This allowed nature to develop more or less undisturbed. Currently, natural history tours of the southern Bug are conducted. Registration is possible at the tourist office in Dranske.
