Arethusa is the nymph of the spring of the same name on the island of Ortygia off the city of Syracuse in Sicily. In ancient Syracuse she was the patron goddess of the city.
I see my work as a tightrope walk towards my own center. The world as a model in which the eye can wander for a long time without arriving. The Arethusa of Damgarten is a symbol for the connecting and at the same time separating element of both parts of the double city, the water of the Recknitz.
I have replaced the former black oelisk of the fountain by the source nymph created by me and thus taken up the ancient myth from the city of Syracuse. Arethusa is now guardian of the history of the city of Damgarten. Symbolically, this is in her hand and on the fountain in the form of a shell with reliefs. -Wolfgang Friedrich-
