The German Baltic Sea coastline extends for over 2,000 kilometres, including the coast of its islands. It is highly rich in features, ranging from white, sandy beaches stretching to the famous chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen. Quaint fishing villages adorn the coastline, largely looking exactly as they did in the past centuries – a perfect destination for those interested to see how the life in this area looked like in the past. There are also sophisticated seaside resorts with all the thrills that modern spas have to offer while maintaining the same outside look of the region-specific “resort architecture” (Bäderarchitektur) for the last 200 years. The Baltic Sea has almost no tides and the water levels remain largely at the same level, making it a suitable bathing experience even for less capable swimmers.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is perhaps best known for its Lake District. Formed during the last ice age some 12,000 years ago, this region has earned itself the colloquial name of “the land of thousand lakes” and is well known for its diverse flora and fauna. It is home to several nature parks, most notably the Müritz National park that lies at the largest lake of the Lake District, the Lake Müritz.

There are many things to do and see in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the national parks, tours are offered where you can observe the wildlife close up; bird watching is especially popular in this area.
